Hamish's Weekly Highlights including Hot 'n' Humpy in Hampstead

This week started off with a surprise meeting with Iris and Flo. We haven't seen them for ages because Iris fell off a horse at work and broke all the bones in her foot. She's nearly better now but still limping along and not going for long walks. Hamish was very pleased to see them both.
Sometimes we meet friends for coffee on Broadway Market, it's really nice to sit outside and Hamish enjoys the sunshine and lots of attention.
On Saturday we went up to Hampstead Heath. I think the Heath must be our favourite place for walking with Hamish, he seems to love it more than anywhere else and get's a real burst of excited energy and a bouncy spring in his step.Once he discovered they're not just for eating, Hamish quickly became very skilled working with sticks.
We met up with Ruby on the Heath (it was planned) but Hamish got such a shock and nearly went berzerk with excitement. It was like he was saying "Look, look who's here, so far away from home - how the heck did she find us way up here, oh, oh I think I love her, oooops no scratch that last comment?"Ruby and Hamish would like to have puppies but they don't really know how to go about it....Ruby says "Am I doing this right dad?"Waiting for the train, a bit tired out.

Then complete exhaustion (man and beast) at home on the sofa.

Hi Charlie and Rocket,
We are super-excited and verrrrrrrrrrry nervous cos we're going to our first show (not that we've done ringcraft or anything yet) . Actually I'm wondering if Charlie will be going??? It's the Mid Herts Gundog Open Show on May 11th and we've been talked into taking the plunge. My mantra is now 'whatever happens I'll take the best dog home'.

'Whatever happens I'll take the best dog home'....as I do after every walk in the park.

Thanks for your lovely comments.

Hey Hamish,

Good luck at the show. Are you planning on doing any champ shows as I am entered in three this year. Richmond, Windsor and Southern Counties which are all relatively close to London.

We'll see how we get on at this one first Anna. I'm very nervous about it and he's also going to get looked over by those in the know outside the ring too. If he has some definite flaws that are contrary to the breed standard then I suppose there's no point in taking it any further. I've noticed a few things already that they might not like, e.g. he has quite a bit of loose skin around his neck.

We'll see, I'm trying to be a bit lighthearted about it all.

Perhaps you could give us some ringcraft training tips? We're doing a bit every day at the moment but at the very beginning i.e. just trying to get him to stand instead of sitting which seems to be his default position now.

My dear Hamish,

I suggest taking a portfolio of architectural projects with you to the show. The judges will be far too impressed with your building skills to notice a little extra skin here and there.

Hi Hamish,
I am not that in the know but what I always try to do is to make it very positive - a unhappy dog will try and tuck his tail and lower his head.

Have you videoed you and him when running him round the ring. If not it is a very good thing to do so that you can see at what speed he looks best at.

Ziggi also has the habit of sitting instead of standing. It doesn't matter too much as long as you get him up as soon as he does it (if not being looked over by the judge it doesn't matter so let him relax).
I don't know how he is on the move but if he does ever muck about (e.g. jumping up etc...) then don't panic - just stop where you are and settle him down and then start off again.

Hope this helps and good luck.
Anna

Thanks Anna, that feels like good advice and very supportive.

Buster, funny Dad here started out life studying architecture but left after a year. Better get some drawings done quick.
